In New York, the city government is committed to Vision Zero, a policy for traffic safety. But the people who say such things act as though they believed them. Nobody needs to die.” As I write these words, I can’t help but feel that I am caricaturing an altogether fitting and noble concern for the value of life. This amounts to saying that, if we could get things just right, nobody needs to die. With the right safeguards and early detection, every disease can be cured. We act as though, with proper and rigorous application of science and technology, we can fend off death. But many of us are functional transhumanists.
